What are the chances of surviving open heart surgery?

My brother is going in for heart surgery tomorrow because the valve that is supposed to pump blood out of his heart is pumping blood out but also bringing some blood back into his heart. They are going through his chest. I was just wondering what his chances of survival is?

It is nice that you are worried about your brother.

From what you describe, he has probably had this for some time. He will be fine. They have been doing this surgery for well over 40 years. He will be sore and will probably have some tubes here and there when he comes from surgery, but his chance of survival is very, very high.
