I dont know, but I wonder if they demanded equal pay for non equal work back then aswell?
I think I remember a time (up to the 1960s) when the ladies’ final was actually the main event in one sense. The men’s final used to be played on the Friday and Wimbledon ended on Saturday with the ladies’ final. It’s only in the professional era (1970s on) that it went the other way round in terms of order of play and also went to the Sunday.
On the other hand, I may be so old that I’m just wrong – memory plays tricks when you get to my age
